If you prefer secluded beaches to spring break hotspots, then this out-of-the-way part of West Central Florida is your ticket to R&R. Rent a beach house on tucked-away Don Pedro Island, accessible only by ferry or private boat, or on tony Gasparilla Island, known as the “Tarpon Capital of the World.” With little traffic, activities like fishing, tennis and lighthouse-climbing are the hobbies du jour on these remote islands.
A long weekend along this byway might have you feeling lost in time. And for a truly timeless getaway, visit the area’s three historic districts. The area of El Jobean boasts a charming post office/general store.
